Wildlife, Flora & Founa: Nature is in abundance, particularly birds of prey and insects and even some rare species of wild flower. During a short sojourn you could spot pigeons, vultures, eagles and even ospreys. Pyrenean wildlife is equally spectacular - from deers and isards to marmots and wild bears.
Pigeon Hunting: This is an inescapable activity in Sauveterre. The beloved palombe of southwest France! The white pigeons come from Sweden among other countries during October and November and make a stop here to feed before making the last leg of their trip and reach the final destination in Africa. Pigeons are tricked to land at the nets spread around to trap them. Trained domestic pigeons are used as spies to trap the flying white pigeons who land on the ground and get trapped.
Mountain Climbing: Imposing and mysterious, the Pyrenees mountain range is surely Europe's most dramatic and have captivated writers, artists and naturalists for generations. The clarity of light and purity of atmosphere defy description.
Skiing: Luchon offers you the chance to enjoy a great day skiing at the nearby ski station of Superbagneres, accessed by cable car for total ease of travel. It is wonderful to ski in the Pyrenees. The season can begin in November, if the snow arrives, and end after the French Easter holidays. It can be very rewarding offering wonderful views of the mountains.
Rafting, Kayaking, Canoeing and Other Water Sports: The place offers exceptional weather conditions during summer for water sports in the superb rivers and lakes in Sauveterre.
Wind and Kite Surfing: An hour's drive could take you to glorious beaches where you can enjoy the best surfs.
Cycling: The region is considered the cycling nirvana with Col des Rares, Luchon and Col d'Aubisque being important spots for Tour De France. It attracts cyclists from all over Europe, America, Australia and New Zealand. For cycling there are numerous tracks which enable you to safely see the countryside. With its varied terrain and spectacular scenery, the surroundings around the hotel look even more beautiful when seen on a bike.
Fishing: You can fish for salmon, trout and numerous other fish in the local rivers. During your stay we can organize half or full day fishing trips.
Walking: Sauveterre and its surrounding areas are great for walking. As we are in the heart of the Pyrenees promenade, there is 300 km of off road nearby. You only have to cross the road opposite the hotel to find miles of paths amid the greenery along the woods.
Horse riding and Pony Trekking: There are excellent opportunities for horse riding throughout the region. If you want to take in the wide skies and find those hidden treasures amongst the diverse landscapes, then pony trekking is the ideal thing to do. Those with a passion for riding can check out Sauveterre Horse-Riding Centre, Olonne-sur-mer. Located close to the forest and beaches of Olonne, the centre offers horse and pony rides on the beach, in the forest or through the marshes. Horse-riding lessons are given by state-qualified instructors, from beginners to advanced riders.
Walking with a Donkey: Try this original and funny adventure. Packsaddles will be useful to carry your bags and children will be able to ride the donkeys so that everybody can enjoy the activity.
Golfing: Beautiful golf courses lie within minutes of the hotel offering great golfing experience. You can find two golf courses with 9 holes each about 30 kilometers away. An 18-hole golf course lies 35 kilometers away. In addition, there are other courses in the periphery of 50 to 60 kilometers.
Theatre: You can enjoy excellent theatre at Bagneres de Luchon considered as the queen city of the Pyrenees with a vibrant heart.
Casino: Why not take your chance at the Casino de Barbazan about 7 kilometers away?
Markets: A visit to the market is a must-do of any trip to this region, for the quality and colours of the produce and the lively atmosphere.
Antique Hunting: This lovely town is a treasure trove for antique hunters. You can find some truly valuable antiques in shops surrounding Sauveterre. Experience the local culture and traditions by wandering through the market and exploring fairs.
Caving: This region is a pleasure for all speleologists. Come and discover the wonderful caves which have been sculpted by water for thousands of years in a region where tradition reigns in the truest sense of the word.
Paragliding: It is a breathtaking experience to see the Pyrenees from the sky, gliding through the air. A wonderful way of getting close to the birds and enjoying amazing views!
Archeological Sites and Monuments:
All around Sauveterre de Comminges you will find legendary castles, historical monuments, rich archeological sites, religious edifices and museums. Each has its own charm but the most prominent and visited among these is Saint-Bertrand-de- Comminges & Basilica. It is a commune in the Haute-Garonne department built on the site of a Roman city. Here you can some very traditional barns of the region with their impressive carpentry. The Cathedral of Saint Mary dominates the quiet village. It was built in the 12th century has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a highlight of a visit to St. Bertrand de Comminges - above all for its belltower, cloister and gate. Don't miss the carvings in the choir done by the best of Toulouse craftmen in the early 16th century. Aside from the cathedral the village has a Romanesque basilica as well as Roman ruins. There is also an archeological site close to the Cathedral in which it is possible to identify the remains of a Roman thermae and of a theatre.
Fetes and Music Festivals:The region is famous for its hospitality. This generous spirit is brilliantly demonstrated during the fete season which lasts from March to September. The 'Transhumances Musicales de Laàs', held at Chateaux de Laàs, 10 min drive from Sauveterre, is a festival of local music and culture.
Chestnut and Cider Festival: Every year on October 30 and 31st Sauveterre hosts Chestnut and Cider Festival. In the centre of the town in Place aux Arcades, chestnuts are roasted and washed down with sweet cider accompanied with folk music. You will also find the autumn market with seasonal products and arts and craft.
Theme Park: Action, thrills and excitement awaits you at the well-appointed local theme park. Enjoy the beautiful lakes and water features.
